It possesses a coast of 600 km facing on the Atlantic Ocean stretching from Ndiago in the south up to Nouadhibou in the north. To the north it is adjacent to Algeria, Morocco, Mali to the East, and Senegal to the south.
Mauritania constitutes a crossing point between North Africa and the Black Africa
Mauritania is par excellence the most arid and wide country of the Sahel, desert to more than 75%, with an area of 1 030 700 km². This country has two seasons:
- a rainy season characterized by three to five months of irregular rainfall and badly distributed;
- a very short cold season.

The climate, Sahara in the North and Sahelian in the South, is generally hot and dry. It is milder in the border of the Atlantic Ocean and has four months of rainy season from June to September.
